Toilet attendants are helping venues save up to £13 million per year by flushing out false insurance claims.
Specialist bar and club insurer Marsh Bar and Club has found that venues employing toilet attendants are less likely to make a liability claim compared to those that don’t.
Almost 50 percent of the UK’s nightclubs fall victim to false insurance claims per year, at a cost of up to £13 million to insurers.
Club and bar venues confirm that having a permanent presence in their toilets has dramatically reduced the number of reports of accidents by pub, club and nightclub owners. Repair costs, drug taking, vandalism and reports of crime have also decreased.
Chris Wills, manager of NB’s in Northampton, comments: “Up until two years ago, we didn’t see the need in employing toilet attendants, but started to notice an increase in reports of alleged accidents and drug taking. NB’s is famous for its themed dark ‘dungeon’ toilets, but because they were located downstairs, they were an ideal place for patrons to claim to have had an accident. Without anyone around to say otherwise, we were losing out.
“After employing a company to look after our customers, we have noticed a real change. They not only ensure that the toilets remain clean and tidy throughout the night, but also add to the atmosphere by pampering customers with products and getting them into the party mood.”
Permanent toilet attendants also help venues comply with health and safety regulations by conducting half hourly toilet inspections, which are essential in order to comply with most insurance policies.
Peter Jackaman, managing director of Marsh Bar & Club Insurance, says: “Many insurers have to deal with slip/trip claims if toilet checks are not documented. This will eventually reflect in an increase in premiums in addition to higher policy excesses. We are ensuring that our clients take a proactive approach by giving them inspection checklists and recommending that they look into employing a toilet attendant, as the advantages far outweigh the cost.”
